The 5Point Film Festival, held on Friday, Aug. 14 and Saturday, Aug. 15, is based in Colorado but celebrates the WNC community and hopes to inspire environmental stewardship and outdoor industry development.
Chris Thile stays pretty busy. When Mountain Xpress caught up with him, the McArthur genius and virtuoso mandolinist was just about to board a plane for St. Paul, Minn. There, his band Punch Brothers was scheduled to perform, and Thile was slotted to guest-host A Prairie Home Companion for a couple of weeks. The variety […]
Ever since its 2011 printing, E.L. James’ erotic romance novel 50 Shades of Grey has been an inescapable presence in pop culture. While as literature — 500 pages of dominance, submission, bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism stitched together with little character development — James’ “mommy porn” leaves much to be desired, there’s no doubting the […]
ASO is extending its concert season into January for the first time ever to give Ashevilleans an opportunity to experience “a classical piece that everyone should hear live at least once.”
Photos by David Simchock of Front Row Focus. I’m not a fan of the whole “killing it” thing, but rarely has there been a more apt usage of the term than at the end of Beck‘s show at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium. Following the searing, sweat-drenching, absolute mayhem of the seven-piece band’s performance of “E-Pro,” […]
Nickel Creek’s reunion tour stops in Asheville Five years ago, Nickel Creek — one of the most respected young acoustic bands in America — called it quits. Now, to celebrate 25 years since that band formed, its members have regrouped with a brand-new album, A Dotted Line, and a tour. They’ll swing through Asheville for […]
While I can’t speak to how awesome a Pixies show was in 1988, I also can’t imagine Frances Black and his fellow musicians rocking any harder than they did on Saturday night at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium. The band started with “Bone Machine,” encored with “Debaser” and “Planet of Sound” and played every big song one could have reasonably wished for in between. Photos by Nick King
With more than 50 published novels and hundreds of short stories to his name, author Stephen King is obviously prolific. He’s also proven to be quite versatile, taking the jump into musical theater with Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, playing at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium on Sunday, Oct. 13. While the idea of a libretto […]

People, what are you waiting for? Are you going to see Aziz Ansari? If you are not, you may be making a terrible mistake. Ansari plays the ridiculously funny Tom Haverford on NBC’s “Parks and Recreation.”
AC Entertainment made the announcement this morning. The Denver-based rock band comes to the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of many local standup comics (some of which write for this very paper’s “Asheville Disclaimer”), we now live in a city where you can go see fantastic local, regional and national comedians every single night of the week. But you wouldn’t know it by reading the Mountain Xpress. I cracked […]
The real star of the Tuesday night show was Derek Vincent Smith’s mind-boggling new LED lighting set. Photos by Shaun Hollingsworth.
The band returns on Tuesday, Oct. 4. Tickets go on sale this Friday.
Here’s the audio recording of our entire interview with comedian and pundit Bill Maher, who is performing on Friday, April 22, at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in downtown Asheville. In this webcast, we gauge Maher’s thoughts on city Council member Cecil Bothwell’s atheism, Rep. Heath Shuler and many other subjects that didn’t make it in to print.
Robert Plant and Band of Joy might not have reinvented rock ‘n roll at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium, but they put a new spin on “Rock and Roll” along with plenty of other Led Zeppelin classics and new material from Plant’s recently-release Band Of Joy album. Photo by Rich Orris.
Singer/songwriter Conor Oberst will release a new album on February 15 and play Thomas Wolfe Auditorium next March.
