Asheville family making strides to raise awareness for preeclampsia

The Preeclampsia Foundation is pleased to announce that Sarah Bender Hope and her family are the Asheville, NC Promise Walk for PreeclampsiaTM Mission Family. As this year’s face of preeclampsia, the Hope Family will lead the Promise Walk campaign by sharing their compelling, tragic, and hopeful childbirth story, and encouraging teams around the city to meet their fundraising goals.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park hosts free festival Saturday, June 18

Great Smoky Mountains National Park will host the annual Women’s Work Festival at the Mountain Farm Museum on Saturday, June 18. This festival honors the vast contributions made by the women of Southern Appalachian and showcases lifeways that women used to keep their families going in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The event is from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and all activities are free.

County Commission recap: Moffitt joins local government­, rezoning concerns

The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners is back to seven members after Tim Moffitt was officially sworn in to replace Miranda DeBruhl, who abruptly resigned last month. Commissioner Moffitt said, “It’s and honor to serve with you and I look forward to contributing where I can.” The Tuesday, June 7, meeting also featured members of the public expressing concerns about rezoning a parcel of land in east Asheville and continued budget talks ahead of a June 30 deadline to approve a spending plan for fiscal year 2017.

Aloft Asheville Downtown presents $10,000 to Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue

Aloft Asheville Downtown announced today that it is donating $10,000 to local non-profit Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue (CAAR). Aloft was awarded a $5,000 grant to donate to the local charity of its choice by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide as the recipient of its 2016 Starwood Cares for the Community Hotel Volunteer Award for the North American region.

Haywood County Library gardening classes available

From February into September, the Canton branch of the Haywood County Public Library hosts gardening classes enriched by the “Giving Garden” located behind the library. These classes teach interested adults about soil and fertilizers, the plight of the Monarch butterfly and other pollinators, square-foot gardening, food preservation, cooking with herbs and more.
