Author Joseph Bates to read from his collection of short fiction ‘Tomorrowland’

Press release

From UNC Asheville News Services:

Joseph Bates will read from his new collection of short fiction, “Tomorrowland,” at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17 in UNC Asheville’s Karpen Hall, Laurel Forum. The event is free and open to the public, and includes light refreshments.

“Tomorrowland” is Bates’ debut story collection, and includes a world of freakish former child stars, abused Elvis impersonators, derelict roadside attractions and apocalyptic small towns. George Singleton, author of “Stray Decorum,” said the stories are “quirky, sly, brilliant, playful stories that belong shelved somewhere between Barthelme and Saunders.”

Bates is also the author of “The Nighttime Novelist “(Writer’s Digest, 2010), and his short fiction has appeared in such journals as “The Rumpus,” “New Ohio Review,” “Identity Theory,” “South Carolina Review,” “Fresh Boiled Peanuts,” and “InDigest Magazine.” He teaches in the creative writing program at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he is also provost and vice president for academic affairs.

This event is sponsored by UNC Asheville’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society. For more information contact Kirk Boyle, UNC Asheville literature lecturer, at 828.250.3915 or kboyle@unca.edu.
