From a press release:
Front Porch Theatre at BMCA presents JUMP! Aug. 15-17
The Front Porch Theatre at Black Mountain Center for the Arts is happy to present JUMP!, a children’s theater production on Friday and Saturday, August 15,16 (6:30 pm) and Sunday matinee, August 17 (2pm). A $15 ($10 for kids) donation is requested at the door. The Black Mountain Center for the Arts is located at 225 W. State Street.
JUMP! is an exuberant story for all ages told through movement and music. This production, locally written and produced, is directed and choreographed by Amy Maze who has found a home at the Center for the Arts. She teaches regular dance classes there for students ages 3 to15 years old. She also spearheaded the Summer Arts Camp sessions held throughout the summer at the Arts Center and was an integral part of the recent Front Porch Theatre production of Greater Tuna.
Maze studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts and UNCG where she graduated with honors with a BFA in choreography and performance. Her choreography and instruction has won top honors at regional and national competitions. In addition to teaching she is sought after for her musical choreography, which includes Oliver, Lil’ Abner, The Wizard of Oz, Nunsense, Princess and the Pea, Beauty and the Beast, Peter Pan, Cinderella and most recently Annie.
“I have always loved children’s stories and I am so honored to be sharing this new work with Black Mountain,” said Maze. “We are striving hard to challenge the children with a multi-level creative process. The children in the cast are incredibly talented and devoted to creating something magical. We have more fun at rehearsals than should be allowed.”
This community theater production is being created by Black Mountain artists and performers. JUMP! was written by Arts Center program coordinator Jessica Klarp who has written several locally produced plays including The Anatomy of Melancholy for P. O’Connor Puppets, The Salt Crystal with Red Herring Puppets and the comic melodrama Beaucatcher. The set design is by Julia Burr and costumes by Dominica Bello and Tina Rosato. The original music is composed by Jeremy Agers and Andrew Ross with additional original compositions provided by Black Mountain resident Zach Cooper.
The cast is made up of ten local children: Lilyanne Bobilya, Annabelle Harrison, Adelaide Little, Ayden Mohr, Wyatt Ramsey, Anisa Vila, Amaya Vila, Che Vila, Grace Williamson, and Keira Williamson.
This will be the fourth production of the Front Porch Theatre, a community theater group at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts. The next season will begin with The Turn of the Screw in the Fall 2014, followed by a Holiday Show in December and then Steel Magnolias in Spring 2015.
