Several local food-service operations are aiding in the search for the cause of a salmonella outbreak. Some local restaurants are also voluntarily working with health department officials to educate their employees about the bacteria and how to keep it from spreading.
Though the source remains undetermined, a local tempeh company, Smiling Hara, has decided to pull some of its product while it is being tested out of concern for customers.
The company posted this on its Facebook page this morning:
“There has been a recent Salmonella outbreak in Asheville and although there are no strong conclusions yet, our product is suspect of being contaminated. We will have firm results from lab testing 10 days from now and will post these on facebook. Until then, if you have our tempeh at home please do not eat it until further notice. Thank you all so much for your support.”
To reiterate, tests have not yet concluded that there’s been any contamination to the tempeh. The family that owns the company has been eating the product, and reports no side effects:
“We have all eaten it as well (including my two year old son) and none of us are sick. This was a week ago from the batch of tempeh that was suspicious. We are taking this precautionary measure to make sure we are not taking any chances with the health and well being of our customers. We will keep you posted.”
