Plans underway to transform BB&T Building into upscale hotel in downtown Asheville

Planning is underway to renovate the landmark BB&T Building at 1 West Pack Square in downtown Asheville into an upscale hotel and condominium complex by 2017, according to a report by Mike Cronin of the Asheville Citizen-Times and an announcement on the McKibbon Hotel Group’s official website.

The project will be headed up by the McKibbon Hotel Group, which already owns several downtown hotels, including the Courtyard Marriott and the Aloft Asheville Downtown hotel. The proposed BB&T renovation will be the company’s first redevelopment project, according to Cronin’s April 28 article for Citizen-Times.

The new complex, which will be renamed as the Nouveau Tower upon completion, will feature a restaurant and bar, open to the public, in addition to several thousand square feet set aside for meeting rooms, 35 condominiums, and 150 guest rooms, and has been described as “absolutely be the nicest hotel in the city,” according to MHG’s chairman John McKibbon, who made the announcement to the Citizen-Times earlier today.

Guest room rates are projected to be comparable to existing upscale hotels such as The Grand Bohemian Hotel Asheville in Biltmore Village and Omni Grove Park Inn, at around $400 per night.

Architects are already evaluating the existing interior and exterior aspects of the BB&T Building; according to the Citizen-Times article, McKibbon states that major construction on the site could begin in the next year.
