PRESS RELEASE:

“You have the touch of a love-starved cobra.”

So says Sheridan Whiteside, the worst guest in the history of guests. From referring to a room in the family’s home as a “drafty sewer” to practically forcing his caregiver to leave the nursing profession and instead open a munitions factory, Mr. Whiteside is a tart-tongued crank who spares no one from his vitriol. And it’s hilarious! The Man Who Came to Dinner will open at the downtown theatre on Friday, April 8 and run through Sunday, April 24, 2016 with performances on Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 pm and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 pm. Tickets are available online, over the phone, or in person at the Asheville Community Theatre Box Office.

“The writing in The Man Who Came to Dinner is delicious,” said Susan Harper, Executive Director of Asheville Community Theatre. “Sheridan Whiteside wields a sharp tongue. His zingers are often beastly but always laugh out loud funny. I think we’re all glad to not be on the receiving end!”

In The Man Who Came to Dinner, snooty critic Sheridan Whiteside is invited to dinner at the home of the Stanleys, where he slips on their doorstep and breaks his hip. Six weeks later, the Stanley household is still monopolized by the cranky and demanding invalid who insults the family, runs up a $784 phone bill, and receives strange gifts from his friends (penguins! cockroaches! an octopus!) – all of which cause further chaos.

The Man Who Came to Dinner was written by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart who based the character of Sheridan Whiteside on their friend Alexander Woolcott. Asheville Community Theatre’s production of The Man Who Came to Dinner is directed by Jeff Catanese and stars a cast of 19 community members, 10 of whom are making their ACT Mainstage debuts!

Opening Weekend features the “RSVP” Deal – all adult, senior, and student tickets for all three Opening Weekend performances are only $18.00. Other Opening Weekend perks include complimentary champagne on Opening Night, complimentary chocolate on Saturday night, and a talk-back with the cast and crew after the Sunday matinee.
