While we all wait for the Board of Elections to validate signatures, I think we should all reflect on what was achieved in the Let Asheville Vote petition drive.
There was no one person that we couldn’t do without. Rather, there were dozens of people whose absence would have derailed our campaign. There were the few who actually started Let Asheville Vote, the media who told everyone what was happening, the businesses that let us put out petitions, the “second shift” people who came in with fresh legs when we were dog-tired. Each played a vital role in the process.
There were the spouses who understood when we couldn’t get home on time. There was the church that brought us hot dogs, watermelon and cold drinks because they thought we might be hungry. They just don’t know how badly we needed that.
Then there were the people who showed up with sheets that had a few signatures, like the older man with a cane who brought in four or five. The 20-something guy who registered to vote and came straight over to sign the petition. Those added up to hundreds or maybe thousands. Those people were the difference between success and failure. They would hand in their sheet or two and then thank us. We all know that it was those anonymous people, who took a little time to help us, who pushed this thing over the hump. Every single signature counts to me, regardless of how the validation turns out.
