Americana and world music are two genres that don’t often overlap, but after listening to The Billy Sea’s progressive, hypnotically rhythmic sound, you’ll be glad they did. “Founded by slide guitar revolutionary Billy Cardine, the sound is firmly planted in American roots music, but also pulls influence from all corners of the world,” according to the band’s bio. Cardine is joined by Grammy-winning percussionist, River Guerguerian, and the innovative Jake Wolf on six-string bass.
The Billy Sea will perform at RiverLink RiverMusic series at the RiverLink Sculpture and Performance Plaza, 144 Riverside Drive, on Friday, July 11. Gates open at 5 p.m., and the music goes until 10 p.m. Guerguerian will open for the band, appearing with the Jeff Sipe Global Percussion Ensemble, Robert Mangum and Parrish Ellis.
As always at the RiverMusic series, good music will be paired with good food and drink. Expect beer service from New Belgium Brewing and Sierra Nevada. Local food trucks The Lowdown, Pho Ya Belly, Melt Your Heart, Smashbox and Gypsy Queen will all be in attendance. There will also be non-alcoholic beverages available from Ursa Minor and Buchi Kombucha, as well as ice cream from The Hop.
And true to the spirit of RiverLink’s mission, the RiverMusic series is environmentally conscious. The event is powered by Sundance Power Systems, Inc, and attendees are encouraged to bike and make use of public transportation. There will be a bike corral, boat access allows attendees to arrive by boat and three nonstop trollies will operate from 5-10 p.m. (See trolley schedules below.)
Trolley service is available for this concert with pickups in three locations:
- In West Asheville, there will be service at Grace Baptist Church, 718 Haywood Road. The Grace parking area is towards the rear of the building. Parking is not allowed in the bank lot.
- On the other side of the river, the trolley stop will be the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, 36 Montford Ave.
- And further south, there will be a trolley stop at 63 Brook St, the new home of Catawba Brewing.
