Restaurants have been popping up all over West Asheville this spring with a pace and vigor reminiscent of popcorn kernels heating up in a kettle. Moogfest Q+A: Slow Hands
Sure, the Moogfest lineup is star-studded (I’m looking at you, M.I.A., Kraftwerk and Niles Rodgers). But the roster — which numbers over 100 acts just for the night program alone — includes some lesser-known gems worth discovering. This series of email interviews is culled from my personal list of interesting artists I plan to check out.
Asheville Under Glass: Silverlocks
When the lights go up following an afternoon movie in cinemas across Asheville, one notes a sea of white, silver and pewter atop the heads of moviegoers. That view makes me ever-so-comfortable. But my comfort didn’t come naturally. I wrestled with it for years — whether or not to continue bleaching my hair the blonde […]
Mother Earth News Fair offers fun for all ages
Reporting and photo by Josh O’Connor. The Mother Earth News Fair kicked off with a bang this morning, April 12, at the WNC Agricultural Center. Attendance at the fair appeared to be overwhelming, causing traffic back-ups in both directions on Interstate 26 as people rushed to get into the gates. A wide range of individuals both […]
Standing room only: Mother Earth News Fair draws crowds
The first day’s attendance seemed to overwhelm the WNC Ag Center, though that may not be surprising. The event is a homecoming of sorts: The Mother Earth News has roots in Henderson County in the ’70s where it operated a 600-acre Eco Village.
Sound Track web extra: “Stranger Things and Truer Words”
Local singer-songwriter Paul Edelman’s February release is a pitch-perfect collection, inspired largely by travel — in both the exterior and interior sense. The 10 tracks stitch dusty Americana and gritty folk-rock with jangly guitar and the kind of songwriting that hits sharp and sticks strong as a stubborn splinter. In the very best way.

Watch and learn: Playback Theatre creates community healing
“Let’s watch.” These words commence the evening’s performance at Playback Theatre. Actors come forward, improvising as they go to illustrate a story. Audience members will likely resonate with the unfolding tale because it is, after all, their story. Within this theatrical environment, actors and audience participate in a night of theater and storytelling that can […]
Blame it on Holly Golightly (she plays The Grey Eagle in Friday, April 11)
Now, 20-plus albums into her career, Golightly has just released It’s Her Fault. Don’t expect it to sound radically different from earlier releases, says a press release. “It’s still a raw, rough-hewn stew of twisted roots music forged by the duo’s distinct musical interests…” Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs play The Grey Eagle on Friday, April 11. 9 p.m., $10/$12. The Shine Brothers also perform.
BEER SCOUT: Is it summer yet?
Perhaps it was a coincidence that the Sierra Nevada media preview last week felt like the first real day of spring. But after winding up an entryway that will make the Biltmore Estate look over its shoulder, after walking into an entire warehouse where the lights are motion-activated and bags of malt are stacked as […]

For fermentation enthusiasts, the process is almost spiritual. Cultured foods “are the food of the people,” they say. “It belongs to all of us. It’s not just for foodies … or people who can afford to go out and buy raw, fermented foods at the store; it’s for all of us.”

Board of Adjustments approves revised Coggins Farm plan
After nearly eight hours of witness testimony, evidence and cross-examinations, the Buncombe County Board of Adjustment voted 6-1 to approve the proposed development of Coggins Farm in Riceville. During the hearing, the board had the opportunity to hear from neighbors concerned with the possibility of development affecting their own property values, flooding from Bull Creek and the increased traffic the project would create on roads that residents say are already dangerous.
