Asheville native Elliot Heller (aka DJ Equal) is based in New York City, but makes regular visits back to his hometown where he not only catches up with family and friends, but throws dance parties. In an interview with Xpress last year, Heller said that he got started as a drummer. Then, “One day I happened upon a turntable at the back of Hip Replacements and asked if I could take a spin and they said sure. It immediately felt comfortable and I loved it.” These days, DJing has him traveling the world. “I think Berlin has impressed me the most as far as the local nightlife scene,” he says. “My other top places, if I had to choose, would probably be Tokyo and Iceland.
