Because the best playlists are a combination of newly-discovered music and tried-and-true gems, this week Xpress pulls songs both from just-released albums (and one so new it comes from a live show recording) along with two tracks from 2013 records and one from the vaults.
• “Whichever One Comes First” is off the new release, The Lonesome Sea, from folk-rockers Even the Animals. Find the album here; the band plays a record release party at French Broad Brewing Co. on Saturday, July 5, 6-8 p.m.
• “Closer” is a vintage track from local indie-pop band stephaniesid. That group performs at Asheville Music Hall on Saturday, June 28, at 9 p.m.
• “Soul to Soul” is by singer-songwriter Jay Brown, off his 2013 album of the same name. Brown performs with Lazybirds at The Phoenix in Brevard, on Friday, June 20; and The Straightaway Cafe in Black Mountain, on Sunday, June 29.
• “Won’t be Fooled” comes from the just-released album, Southern Trees by bluegrass outfit Sanctum Sully. The band does not currently have any local shows booked.
• “123” kicks off last year’s Pleasure Chest by local rockers Red Honey. The band plays The Orange Peel on Sunday, July 13, providing music for adult circus cabaret show Teatro del Gusto.
• “Sailing Away,” by Daniel Shearin, was recorded live at his Memorial Day show at The Mothlight. Shearin does not currently have any local shows booked.
