Holiday windows contest winners announced

The Asheville Downtown Association (ADA) today announced the winners of its annual Holiday Windows Contest, sponsored by Window World of Asheville. The windows contest follows the same theme as the Asheville Holiday Parade. This year’s theme is “Home for the Holidays.”

Categories for judging included: Best Interpretation of Theme, Best Use of Merchandise and Judges’ Favorite. The Asheville Downtown Association will also hold a Fan Favorite vote on its Facebook page at facebook.com/Ashevilleholidays from December 8-31.

Judges for the Holiday Windows Contest were: Thomas Beasey and Denise Spachman of Window World of Asheville, the contest sponsor; Ayana Dusenberry from Asheville Grit and WNC Magazine; Alli Marshall from Mountain Xpress; Stephanie Moore from The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design; Carol Motsinger from the Asheville Citizen-Times; Kasey Smith, ADA board; and Adrian Vassallo, ADA Board President.

And the winners are:
·      Judges’ Favorite – Purl’s Yarn Emporium (pictured above)
·      Best Interpretation of Theme – Sensibilities Day Spa
·      Best Use of Merchandise – HORSE + HERO

“We really enjoy decorating the windows all year and try to create something humorous, that has meaning and that makes people laugh,” said Elizabeth Schell, who co-owns Purl’s Yarn Emporium with her husband, Rik.

Nearly 30 downtown businesses are participating in the contest and Holiday Windows Walking Tour. A Google map of participants is available at ashevilledowntown.org.

“The Holiday Windows Contest is another way to showcase the creative and unique businesses in downtown Asheville and to encourage people to shop, dine and play in downtown during the holiday season,” noted Meghan Rogers, interim executive director for the Asheville Downtown Association.
