CARING For Children hosts MAPPS training for potential foster parents

Local child services organization CARING For Children will be hosting Model Approach to Partnerships in Parenting training sessions for families and individuals interested in becoming foster parents starting Tuesday, September 15, according to a press release from the nonprofit. The first class will be held at the North Carolina Foster Care services office at 50 Riddick Road from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Classes are free of charge to attend and are held each Tuesday and Thursday over the course of eight weeks. Interested individuals will learn about the MAPPS approach to foster care services, which focuses around “building positive relationships and alliances” between birth parents, child welfare staff and foster parents to ensure the long term health and welfare of at-risk children, according to the Children’s Alliance of Kansas website.

CARING For Children, which has worked with children in need around Western North Carolina for over forty years, is offering these classes to help address the current shortage of available foster care options in the region. Xpress covered this shortage, some of the details of the MAPPS training and CARING For Children’s program in an August 11 article (“No place to go“).

Due to the sensitive nature of the classes, children are not permitted to attend. Residents interested in learning more about MAPPS training or signing up for the Fall training sessions are encouraged to contact Rebecca Gardner at (828) 775-4343 or via email at Rebecca.Gardner@Caring4Children.org
