PRESS RELEASE:
Songwriter and musician Joe Novelli writes:
The idea is to gather together a bunch of my favorite indie bandleaders from the world over and have an old-school songwriter night at The Grey Eagle as they often do in Texas and Nashville and other song-centric musical locales … A cozy intimate show where the audience can hear a different side of known bandleaders and composers. And it’s a great way for writers to workshop and test out new and developing songs.
This year I’ve invited a number of songwriters as well as a few musicians both local and from abroad (the lineup is below)
Doors at 7PM, show at 8PM, seated show, all ages, $7 in advance and $10 day of.

Nive Nielsen (Nive and the Deer Children / Greenland)
Nive has an amazing story. She is a native greenlandic person (Inuuk), grew up in the capital city of Nuuk, traveled abroad to study, and was given a ukulele in Canada. She immediately started writing complex and unique songs, and garnered interest from some of her idols such as Howe Gelb and John Parish, both of whom helped produce her first record. With more help from friends (members of Giant Sand, Arcade Fire, Tom Wait’s band, The Black Keys and more) she released the record to mass critical praise. She played her first concert for the Queen of Denmark and went on to become the official Cultural Ambassador of Greenland. She starred in The New World with Colin Farrell, and traveled the world with her music for most of the last 5 years. I met her one snowy night at the Sundance Film Festival, and have since toured with her in the states, Europe, Greenland, Japan, and the remote Northwestern Territories of Canada. Her second record, Feet First, just came out in Europe on Glitterhouse Records, and has already found itself on numerous best-of lists and high charting positions in every country it gets released in. She’s quite something.Daniel Fluitt (Thrift Store Cowboys / Lubbock, TX and Knoxville, TN)
Daniel’s band Thrift Store Cowboys toured the country successfully for 10 years on the indie rock circuit. Now living in Knoxville, TN he continues to write gritty indie country songs with the sound of an old weathered soul.J DiMenna (Asheville, NC and Brooklyn, NY)
J lived in Asheville during the 2000s and there recorded his debut record, Awkward Buildings, with the likes of Drew Heller, Bill Reynolds, Tyler Ramsey, and even Bob Moog on theremin. He has recently returned to Asheville and will make a rare appearance debuting some of his long awaited new material at the Grey Eagle.Joe Novelli (Orkesta Mendoza, Nive and the Deer Children, The Cloud Walls / Tucson, AZ)
I grew up in NY but spent 5 years going to school and living in Asheville. I love a good excuse to come back and play a good show with friends in the old stomping grounds. I play lap steel, guitar, and trumpet for bands all over the world, touring somewhat incessantly. But I also love writing indie folk / country / blues and rock and roll songs. In addition to these and perhaps more special guest songwriters we will be having guest musicians join us to mix the evening up and make it even more dynamic. There will be a few choice Ashevillians in attendance, plus friends from Athens, Knoxville, and further.
