Asheville Lyric Opera stages The Magic Flute April 8 and 10

Asheville Lyric Opera’s production of The Magic Flute premiers at the Diana Wortham Theatre Friday, April 8, 2016 at 8 P.M. with a matinee Sunday, April 10, 2016 at 3 P.M. The Mozart masterpiece features a distinguished cast of performers including several regional natives from the Carolinas.

The Magic Flute is a celebration of love conquering all and transports the audience to an enchanted world where good faces the forces of dark. The blend of high comedy and serious drama is packed with exquisite singing and stage wizardry. The opera first premiered in 1791 and tells the story of Prince Tamino who must save Princess Pamina from her evil mother, the Queen. To help him on his quest he is given a magic flute. With the help of his jovial friend, Papageno, the prince overcomes the trials of Silence, Patience and Courage. The production will include both song and spoken dialogue.

Rock Hill, S.C. native Thomas Joiner will conduct the production. Joiner is an accomplished conductor, violinist, chamber player, and educator. He conducts the Furman Symphony Orchestra and also serves at the music director and conductor of the Hendersonville Symphony Orchestra. He also served as the concertmaster of the Brevard Music Festival Orchestra.

Bass-baritone Adrian Smith will perform the role of Papageno. Smith is a native of Hickory, N.C. In addition to his other accomplishments, he holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Voice Performance from Lenoir-Rhyne University also in Hickory.
