PRESS RELEASE FROM EVENT ORGANIZERS:
The Haken Continuum is unlike any other musical instrument, and next week’s concert in Asheville is guaranteed to be unlike anything you’ve heard before. Developed by inventor Lippold Haken in the spirit of Bob Moog, the Continuum is widely recognized as the most expressively lyrical electronic instrument ever. With fewer than 400 players, its devoted following includes some of the finest musicians on Earth. Five world-class Continuum players from New York, Mumbai, Ottawa, and Asheville will take to the stage on the evening of June 10 in the first such concert anywhere. The ContinuuConcert will take place at the Altamont Theatre in Asheville as part of the first international Continuum conference, ContinuuCon. General admission tickets will be $10 at the door.
It’s not often that a musical performance can honestly be called unique, but the ContinuuConcert promises to be one of a kind. Playing on Continuum will be multi-instrumentalist Rob Schwimmer, who has played with Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson, and many other luminaries. If you’re a fan of Indian music, you may already be familiar with Pallav Pandya, who has performed in more than 40 countries and is traveling from India especially for ContinuuCon. Edmund Eagan is not only an award-winning film composer and sound designer for Canadian television and film, but he also developed the Continuum’s internal sound engine, EaganMatrix. Wayne Kirby, who studied at Julliard and heads the music department at UNC-A, has shared the stage with Jimi Hendrix, Bette Midler, and Deborah Harry and spent over a decade doing music for television. Joining them onstage will be Sally Sparks, member of the Asheville-based ambient electronic ensemble Waveformation. These five talented Contunuum players will perform a program of music ranging from Lennon & McCartney to Olivier Messiaen and Arvo Pärt, as well as original content.

Manufactured by Haken Audio, the Continuum Fingerboard is an electronic musical instrument that allows unprecedented real-time expressivity. With a greater pitch range than a traditional 88-note MIDI keyboard, the Continuum offers continuous performance control in three dimensions for every finger on the playing surface. Inside the instrument is a custom-designed, user-programmable, digital modular synthesizer specifically built to take advantage of the Continuum’s subtle and dramatic expressive musical capabilities.
