Beer today, gone tomorrow: Asheville beer happenings June 14-20

Bottle/can releases

  • Burial Beer Co. celebrates its third anniversary with a dual bottle release on Sunday, June 19, at noon. The second rendition of Garden of Earthly Delights brett saison is brewed with white peppercorn and aged on cucumber, turmeric and tangerine peel, then bottle conditioned with brettanomyces. The 750 milliliter bottles cost $14 each and there is a one-case (12 bottles) limit per person. Anno Domini MMXVI is a dark rye saison barrel-fermented on local blackberries in red wine barrels. The 750-milliliter bottles cost $16 each and there is a three-bottle limit per person.

Small-batch beers

  • Burial Beer Co. has three new releases this week. The Allegory of the Elements Birch Saison (Monday, June 13; 5.4 percent ABV) is brewed with saison yeast and fermented on locally foraged birch twigs. Brewed with a different hops focus each time it’s canned, the latest version of Ceremonial Session IPA (Wednesday, June 15; 4 percent ABV) features mosaic hops with a special house yeast. The ninth iteration of The Forge small batch staff series (Thursday, June 16; 5 percent ABV) is a pale ale brewed with spelt and hopped heavily with Simcoe and Columbus, then aged on medium-roast Colombian coffee beans from 1000 Faces.
  • On Tuesday, June 14, Green Man Brewery began pouring She’s My Cherry Pie, a tribute to Jani Lane. The Munich Weisse is brewed with Munich and wheat malt, soured with lactobacillus and then fruited with 2 pounds per barrel of cherries.
  • Oyster House Brewing Co. is pouring Orange-habanero Pale Ale and Raspberry Beret Blonde casks.
  • On Friday, June 17, at 5 p.m., Asheville Brewing Co. releases Ground Score 2 on draft at all three of its locations. The 6.2 percent ABV caramel apple amber is made with fresh juiced apples, toasted malt and golden caramelized oats. It’s the second in a series of Asheville Brewing beers that include local ingredients scored from friends, farmers and family and follows a saison with local serviceberries gathered by a brewery friend and regular customer.

Special events

  • The Blind Tasting League hosts a Beer Blind Tasting on Wednesday, June 15, from 6-7 p.m. at Metro Wines. Similar in format to the store’s Wine Blind Tasting League, attendees will analyze the visual, aromatic and flavor characteristics of four secret, preselected beers and be led through a discussion of different malt and hops profiles. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased in advance online.
  • On Thursday, June 16, Thirsty Monk downtown hosts Rogue Farm to Tap, featuring four Rogue Ales beers, all made using ingredients grown and harvested by Rogue on its farms. Honey Kolsch (brewed with Rogue Farms Hopyard Honey), Marionberry Braggot (brewed with Rogue Farms marionberries and Hopyard Honey), Good Chit Pilsner (brewed with Rogue Farms floor malted barley) and 7 Hop IPA (brewed with seven Rogue Farms hop varieties) will be available.
  • Bruisin’ Ales‘ weekly free tasting takes place Thursday, June 16 from 5-7 p.m. and features Terrapin Beer Co.‘s summer line-up. Samples of Sound Czech Pils, Watermelon Gose, Maggie’s Peach Farmhouse, Poivre Potion Peppercorn Saison and Liquid Bliss Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter will be poured.
  • On Thursday, June 16, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Tasty Beverage Co. taps a keg of Ballast Point Brewing Co. Thai Chili Wahoo Wheat. Using the traditional wit recipe for Wahoo, this special version has additions of Thai chili, ginger and lime.
  • Lookout Brewing Co. holds a free beer tasting at Fifth Season Gardening Co.‘s South Slope location on Friday, June 17, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
