Kerri Pratt presents “Understanding Air Quality and Climate Change” lecture on Oct. 3 at UNCA

Press release from UNC Asheville:

Kerri Pratt, head of the Pratt Lab in Environmental and Analytical Chemistry at the University of Michigan, will present UNC Asheville’s 22nd Annual S. Dexter Squibb Distinguished Lectures on the theme “Understanding Air Quality and Climate Change,” on Oct. 3. Her morning and evening talks, approaching that theme from two different angles, take place in Highsmith Student Union and are free and open to everyone.

Pratt, the Seyhan N. Eğe Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Michigan, uses novel mass spectrometry techniques to understand the chemistry governing atmospheric trace gases, particles, clouds, and snow in remote, snow-covered, and polar regions.

Her first lecture, “Chemistry on Ice: Shedding Light on Arctic Halogen Photochemistry,” begins at 11:45 a.m. in the Highsmith Blue Ridge Room. The second lecture, at 7 p.m. in Highsmith’s Alumni Hall, is titled “How Is the Rapidly Warming Arctic Changing the Atmosphere?”

Among Pratt’s many honors are the Department of Energy Early Career Award and the American Chemical Society James J. Morgan Environmental Science and Technology Early Career Award Lectureship. She also has been selected for fellowships by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the National Academy of Sciences Gulf Research Program, the National Science Foundation, and NOAA.

The S. Dexter Squibb Distinguished Lecture Series was created to honor the late UNC Asheville Chemistry Department Chair Dexter Squibb, who chaired the department for three decades, from 1964-1994. The series features nationally recognized chemistry educators whose goals reflect the spirit of Squibb’s accomplishments.
