Black Mountain kicks off Christmas season on Dec. 6

The Little Town That Rocks really knows how to rock Christmas. The first weekend of December is filled with pre-Christmas activities that are guaranteed to boost your holiday spirit.

With the town decked out in holiday greenery by the Beautification Committee and merchants, the Christmas season kicks off December 6, with Deck the Trees fundraising event for Swannanoa Valley Christian Community at the Monte Vista Hotel. Visitors can vote for their favorite tree with a monetary donation.

Downtown lights up 5:00 pm on Town Square with a performance by the Community Band, kicking off the annual Holly Jolly event. Merchants will be open until 9:00 pm evening shopping with an opportunity to register for a $25 gift card. Anyone who spends $25 or more between 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm on Friday and 10:00 am-5:00 pm on Saturday, December 7, can send a photo of their receipt to hollyjollyblackmtn@gmail.com by midnight, December 9, with name and email. Four random entries will receive a $25 gift card for their Christmas shopping.

The Holly Jolly festivities continue at 5:30-6:00 pm with the Owen High School Marching Band playing along Cherry Street. Between 6:15-6:45 Black Mountain Center for the Arts and Owen High School Dancers perform at the Depot on Sutton Avenue, followed from 7:00-7:30 by Blue Ridge Taekwondo. At 7:30-8:00: Owen High School Chorus performs, with the final act at 8:00-8:30 by the Black Mountain Center for the Arts Theatre group. Don’t forget to stop by Scout Troop #42 for a cup of Hot Cocoa.

Young children will enjoy hearing the Polar Express Story at Sassafrass on Sutton at 5:00 pm, 6:00 pm, and 7:00 pm, then head to Town Square to visit with Santa where they can share their Christmas Wish list in person, or drop their letters to Santa in his private mailbox.

The Friends of the Library will host their Holiday Book Sale from 3:00 pm-6:00 pm on Sutton Street, and Black Mountain Center for the Arts will be open from 5:00-7:00 pm for their Youth Maker Market. At 8:00 pm, enjoy an evening of Christmas Hammered Dulcimer Music with Joshua Messick at the White Horse Black Mountain.

The holiday spirit continues on Saturday with the Friends of the Library Holiday sale 11:00 am-4:00 pm at the library, ending just in time for the Black Mountain Christmas Parade honoring Grand Marshalls Ed Buchanon and WWII Veteran Ed Snypes. The parade will begin on Flat Creek Road continue along State Street to Cragmont Road and ending at Lake Tomahawk for the Circle of Lights event from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm with refreshments by Four Sisters Bakery.

After the Circle of Lights, head over to the Black Mountain Center for the Arts at 7:30 pm for a “Slice of Life: An Evening of Stories”. Or head over to Montreat College for “A Christmas Tapestry” featuring choral and Instrumental music, or to White Horse Black Moutain for an encore dulcimer performance by Joshua Messick.

End the weekend on Sunday, December 8, at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts events with the Black Mountain Holiday Singalong at 4:00 pm and a Child’s Christmas in Wales at 6:00 pm. Reservations required for these events.
