Earth Day may be over, but caring for creation is an ongoing lesson at Asheville Catholic School, which just unveiled a large rooftop solar array that will combat climate change. Take a behind-the-scenes tour and talk with school leaders about this high-tech renewable energy project.
The 49-kilowatt solar array of 152 panels was installed by Haynes Solar of Asheville. Excess power generated by the array will be sent back to the grid for a credit and for others to use. The array is about the same size as the one installed on St. Eugene Church in 2015, adjacent to Asheville Catholic School, which saves approximately $6,000/year – about 30 percent – on its electricity bills.
The project was funded by St. Eugene Parish, the school and private donors. It caps off a dramatic expansion of the school’s facilities that incorporates environmentally-friendly design elements such as energy-efficient LED lighting and pervious surface parking to collect stormwater runoff.
Asheville Catholic School is the latest in the Diocese of Charlotte’s growing portfolio of environmentally-friendly building initiatives, answering Pope Francis’ call for everyone to care for God’s creation and combat climate change.
