“They may appear to be a traditional bluegrass band at first glance, but they’ve taken the customary old-timey instrumentation to new heights,” reads a press release for Colorado trio Yonder Mountain String Band. Credited with pioneering “a renegade movement to rewrite the definition of the genre,” the Yonder Mountain pickers deliver their self-made brand of rock-inspired roots to more than 100 audiences each year, finding their home on a tour bus that idles only beside the nation’s top music venues. Joining the band on this tour are regular collaborators Jake Jolliff (mandolin) and Allie Kral (fiddle). Indie-folk group Horse Feathers opens for YMSB at The Orange Peel on Thursday, Jan. 22, at 8 p.m. $27.50. theorangepeel.net. Photo by Tobin Voggesser
