All Buncombe County schools achieve passing performance grades

BCS Graduation Rate Up for Sixth Consecutive Year

Buncombe County Schools (BCS) had 100-percent of its schools earn grades of C or better on today’s release of 2016 READY Accountability results, which includes North Carolina’s third annual release of school performance grades. This percentage compares to the state average of 77.1-percent for traditional public schools, and 72.2-percent for public charter schools.

For the sixth consecutive year, the BCS four-year cohort high school graduation rate has increased. This year, BCS has an 85.7-percent graduation rate- an increase over 85.1-percent in 2015 and 83.2-percent in 2014.

Buncombe County Schools by the numbers:

  • 100% of schools earned a school performance grade of “C” or higher compared to the state average of 76.8%;
  • 3 schools received a performance grade of “A”: Buncombe County Early College, Buncombe County Middle College, and the Martin L. Nesbitt, Jr. Discovery Academy;
  • 14 schools received a performance grade of “B”;41.4% of schools achieved performance grades of an “A” or “B” compared to the state average of 32.7%;
  • 1 school Exceeded Expected Growth for four consecutive years: Valley Springs Middle;Valley Springs Middle has the Highest Growth Index of any middle school in NC;
  • The school’s Growth Index places it in the top ½ of 1% of all NC schools;
  • All 3 schools that received a performance grade of “D” for 2015 improved to a “C” this year: Emma Elementary, Erwin Middle, and Johnston Elementary;
