Asheville City Council member Cecil Bothwell announces support for Jasmine Beach-Ferrara

Press release:

Asheville, N.C. (February 18, 2016) – Asheville City Council member Cecil Bothwell has announced he is supporting Jasmine Beach-Ferrara in the District 1 race for County Commission. Bothwell is a small business owner and author who has been on city council since 2009.

“We’re lucky to have three highly qualified candidates running for the open seat on the County Commission in District 1. I have known and worked with Jasmine for a dozen years and I am deeply impressed with her capability as a leader and her passion for equity inclusion. As founder of the Progressive Project in 2003 and the Campaign for Southern Equality in 2011, Jasmine has a solid track record of legal and political success. I believe she will bring a fresh and meaningful perspective to issues facing Buncombe families and workers. I’m voting for Jasmine!,” says Bothwell.

Beach-Ferrara is a Democrat and the founding Executive Director of the Campaign for Southern Equality, an Asheville-based non-profit that promotes LGBT rights throughout the South. Jasmine and her wife, Meghann Burke, live in the East End neighborhood of Asheville with their one-year-old son.

  1. Q: When is the election?
The primary election will take place on March 15, 2016. If Jasmine wins the Democratic primary on March 15th, she will then be on the general election ballot on November 8, 2016. There is no Republican candidate running in District One, so the winner of the Democratic primary is the presumptive winner of the seat.

Q: How many County Commissioners are there?
The County Commission in Buncombe County has 7 members total. There are 3 districts, which each elect two commissioners and the Chair of the County Commission whose “district” is the entire county.

Q: How many people do I vote for for County Commission?
This part is a bit confusing, because the way we elect County Commissioners has changed. In 2016, voters will elect one member to the commission from each of the three districts and also will elect a Chair for the Commission. Each voter in Buncombe county will vote for one person from the district they live in and everyone will also vote for the chair regardless of which district they live in.
