From Asheville Community Theatre:
“Why not try to see things from a diff’rent angle?” at ACT’s Summer Musical La Cage Aux Folles
For the first time in its 70 year history, Asheville Community Theatre will present the musical La Cage Aux Folles, the Tony-award winning musical on which Robin Williams’ hit movie The Birdcage was based. A musical that celebrates love, family, and loyalty while encouraging everyone to say “I am what I am,” La Cage Aux Folles is one of the most popular and successful community theatre musicals in Broadway history. La Cage Aux Folles opens June 3, 2016 and runs through June 26, 2016 with performances Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 pm and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 pm. Tickets are available online, over the phone, or in person at the Asheville Community Theatre Box Office.
All tickets for Opening Weekend performances (June 3-5) are on sale for $20 with the Za-Za-Zoom Deal.
After twenty years of un-wedded bliss Georges and Albin, two men partnered for better-or-worse are shocked when Georges’ son announces his engagement to the daughter of a conservative politician. Because Georges and Albin run a drag nightclub, a complicated situation unfolds: Georges agrees to cover up the “family business” but Albin has other plans.
Jerry Crouch will direct ACT’s production of La Cage Aux Folles. “When I was sitting in the Broadway audience in July 1984, I never dreamed I would get a chance to direct this show,” said Crouch. “I breathlessly watched from fifth row orchestra. This was right after this musical swept the Tony awards winning Best Musical, Best Book, Best Director, and Best Actor!”
“Even though La Cage was everything and more a big-hearted, splashy, glitzy musical should be – romantic couples, flashy costumes and dazzling dances – at its heart, the show is really about maintaining family ties and courageously living your own authentic life,” continued Crouch.
Asheville Community Theatre’s production of La Cage Aux Folles stars Bradshaw Call (The Addams Family, Guys and Dolls) as Albin opposite Coy Theobalt as Georges. They are joined onstage by a cast of 20, which includes many ACT veterans (Tim Geib, James Curley, Carla Pridgen, Jacob Walas, Marcos Cunha, Lupe Perez, Zacary Landolt, Fleming Lomax, Alan Malpass, Trissa King, Frank Salvo, Jerome Sims, Drew Emmanuel) as well as newcomers to the ACT stage (Maximilian Koger, YaShanna Shepherd, Bradey Walter, Zachary Eden, Taylor Knighton, Bob Kelso, Allison Stinson).
“If one person, who feels that he or she cannot be who they are meant to be, who God created them to be, an intricate part of this tapestry of humankind, if that one person leaves the theatre thinking better of themselves and can say “I am what I am!” that will truly be the best reaction I could ever hope for,” said Call.
Musical direction is by Stuart Littleton, and choreography is by Shari Azar. The set is designed by Jill Summers with costumes by Ida and wigs and makeup design by Vanessa Sogan.
