Press release from Asheville Community Theatre:
Is there a show that you’ve always wanted to direct? To star in? Could that show be performed in an intimate, black box theatre? Asheville Community Theatre is seeking proposals for shows to be presented in 35below, the small theatre located at the back of the ACT building, for the upcoming 2018-19 season.
Anyone in the community is welcome to propose a show for the 35below season. Successful applicants should think about shows with small casts and light scenic needs.
“35below is a very small space,” said Jenny Bunn, Marketing Director. “With only 40 seats, the shows that work best in that performance space have smaller casts and sets.”
Producers are also encouraged to consider scripts that offer a diversity of voices, perspectives, and experiences; scripts by women and/or people of color; and scripts that illuminate contemporary issues.
Individuals or groups in the community will produce the show, including selecting the script, choosing a cast and director, rehearsing the play, and making all design decisions. Asheville Community Theatre handles all ticket sales and front of house staffing, will co-market the production, and can provide basic training for light board and sound board operation. Each production will receive 9 performances over three weekends (Friday – Sunday performance schedule) and proceeds from ticket sales will be split between ACT and the producer.
“If you’re considering producing and you have any questions about this process, please give me a call or send me an email,” said Bunn. “We really want to help anyone who’s interested apply.”
