Asheville School students to perform at Asheville Art Museum

Press release from Asheville School:

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (September 29, 2016) The Asheville Art Museum will host Asheville School students for a presentation of their work, “Community: Spoken Word Performance,” on Friday, October 7 at 6:00 p.m. It will take place at the final First Friday before the museum’s renovations begin.

The performance will feature Gelsey Beavers-Damron ’18, Mac Waters ’18, Dohee Kim ’17, and David Zheng ’18.

The students will weave music, spoken word poetry and gestural sketches into an original collaborative performance. The work was created in response to Sharon Louden’s “Community” and is planned to take place amongst the installation.

Waters, who will play a piece by Bach on viola, is excited to have the opportunity to perform at the museum. “We wanted to create a piece where we are reflections of one another,” Waters said. “The space has mirrors all over the place and literally reflects us all around the room.”

Beavers-Damron, who will perform her original spoken-word component of the piece, values the message of the work. “To me, it plays with aspects of growing older and how we are all part of an interwoven fabric. We all grow and become part of the community of the past,” she said.

Kim and Zheng will sketch the performance, hoping to catch the core essence of the work as it unfolds. “The intention [of sketching] is to capture the spirit, the vibe, and overall atmosphere,” Kim said.

Beavers-Damron appreciates the opportunity to collaborate with other artists. “It is a great experience and shows what can be created when artistic minded people work together,” she said.

“Community: Spoken Word Performance” will take place at Asheville Art Museum on October 7 at 6:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public; click here<http://www.ashevilleart.org/event/community-spoken-word-performance/> to see the event information from the Asheville Art Museum.
