Asheville Zombiewalk returns Sunday, Oct. 11

Asheville Zombiewalk, celebrating its 10th anniversary, will gather at Roger McGuire Green Sunday, Oct. 11, at 5 p.m.

Press release from event organizers:

Help us spread the zombie infection for the 10th annual Asheville Zombiewalk in downtown Asheville. The living dead will gather in the heart of the city, Roger McGuire Green, on Sunday, October 11th, beginning at 5pm.

“There will be a little bit of everything: A costume parade for the kids and adults, prizes, and food,” said event organizer Jim MacKenzie. “And to celebrate our tenth birthday, we’re going to make it a ‘Thriller’ night.”

The Asheville Zombiewalk is committed to remaining free for zombie lovers of all ages. But participants are encouraged to bring a few extra dollars for food trucks, the photo booth, or to have makeup done at the event.

The Asheville Zombiewalk requests all participants to please be safe, use common sense, and avoid illegal activities during the walk. It’s fun, it’s a spectacle, but the law still applies to our “Walkers”.

“If you love and support zombies, you don’t want to miss this year’s event. This is our opportunity to celebrate 10 years of undead fun,” said media strategist Sarah Giavedoni.

The Zombiewalk is also continuously accepting donations and sponsorships. See our website below for more information.

The zombiewalk crew is releasing event details as they become available to their website, ashevillezombiewalk.com.

More information from the event organizers:

My name is Jim MacKenzie. I am one of the event’s main organizers this year, along with Sarah Giavedoni. The event started in 2006, so we’re turning 10 years old this year, and we’re super excited.

About 350 people attended last year. We were really happy about the turnout in 2014. We didn’t have a Zombiewalk event in 2013 due to various reasons. It brought us so much joy to see there was still interest and excitement about the Asheville Zombiewalk. We hope our 10th birthday will be the best one yet!

The goal of the Zombiewalk? Asheville was once known as one of the freakiest towns in America. This was more than a decade before we got on the radar of travel websites and started making all these Top 10 lists like “Best Place to Retire” and “Best Place to Gentrify”. There was once a really offbeat vibe in this town. You could walk down the street and swear you had bought admission to a circus sideshow. In recent years, a number of citywide events and festivals have struggled – many have even called it quits, including the iconic Bele Chere festival – but the Asheville Zombiewalk still rises. We continue to demonstrate that the city needs freakiness. The Zombiewalk still stands as a testament to people who want to keep Asheville unique and original and show the world we still have a little quirkiness left in us.

This year’s walk will feature some new activities and some stuff we’ve never done before. We’re going to have a big “Thriller” Dance Off. If you don’t remember all the moves, that’s fine. Don’t worry. We don’t either. But we’ll have coaches on hand to get us all through.

We’re bringing back the scavenger hunt this year since we had so much fun last year. We’ll probably tweak a few things, maybe up the stakes and expand the prize packages. But, it’ll be fun either way.

We’ll have a costume contest as well. Details are still being worked out. It may be a costume contest with a twist. But it’ll be totally worth doing the best job on your costume. That’s the takeaway. Go over and above on your zombie costume this year, and fame and glory can be yours.
