Ben Phan releases new album ‘Fear Is the Teacher’ with June 10 show at Isis Music Hall

Press release:

After a Kickstarter campaign that smashed all expectations – 238 people donated $11,754, well above the goal – Ben Phan and the Soul Symphony’s new album, “Fear Is the Teacher,” will be released at a celebration concert on June 10, 9 pm at the Isis Music Hall.

“The show is going to celebrate the whole community effort to create this album through Kickstarter,” says Phan. “It will be a high energy show with lots of great tunes for dancing.” Jeff Thompson, an award winning songwriter, will open the concert, and special guest Juan Holliday will join him for a few songs.

The Soul Symphony includes some of the most in-demand musicians in Asheville. Their dynamic sound is full of lively improvisation, which Phan makes the most of in his songs, giving the band’s master musicians plenty of opportunity for musical self-expression.

The title, “Fear is the Teacher,” serves as the theme for the album, conveying the freedom Phan has found as an artist by embracing his fear and transforming its teachings into music. “My hope is that people will be inspired by the album to pursue their own dreams and to do whatever they want with their lives,” says Phan. “And I hope the show will give people a sense of connectedness.”

Two-time Grammy award-winning producer Matt Williams recorded the album at his studio, the Eagle Room. “It was an amazing experience to work with him,” says Phan. “We were able to hear everything we were doing crystal clear, which gave us new ideas for how to play together. Everything we’ve learned in the studio will translate into an even better live performance.”

The Isis Music Hall, one of the most popular venues in Asheville, is just about the last big venue in Asheville Phan and his band haven’t yet played, and they’re enthusiastic about having the CD release party there. “The sound quality is renowned,” says Phan. “Folks should come early to grab a seat, or come whenever and dance your heart out.” Food and drink will be available for purchase as well.

The concert will be the first time fans can buy a hard copy of the CD, which will be on sale for $15. Tickets for the June 10 concert are $10 in advance at isisasheville.com, or $12 at the door.
