Legendary bluegrass fiddler and Marshall, NC resident, Bobby Hicks, has just released a new recording for Rebel Records. Entitled “Down Memory Lane,” the CD is a collaboration with high-lonesome singer, Mark Kuykendall. Hicks started working with Bill Monroe in 1954. “The Father of Bluegrass,” Monroe, called Bobby Hicks “the truest fiddler I ever heard.” Hicks would later go on to play for Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder for 22 years, performing on Skaggs’ most successful recordings and winning 10 Grammy Awards along the way. What Kuykendall and Hicks share is a love of bluegrass music and a deep affection for western North Carolina. Hicks was the North Carolina Fiddle Champion when he was 11 years old and just last year was the recipient of the prestigious North Carolina Heritage Award. He has also been inducted into both the North American and World Fiddlers Hall of Fame.
Mark Kuykendall is no stranger to local audiences. The talented musician began his professional career at age nine playing and recording with banjoist Raymond Fairchild. A semi-regular at Shindig on the Green for decades, his appearances were limited to down-time between road stints with Bill Monroe or Jimmy Martin. “It’s unusual to have a band with two former Bluegrass Boys,” declared Kuykendall. Many of the songs on the new recording were penned by Kuykendall. And everyone is going to love hearing Bobby Hicks sing bass on “A Beautiful Life.”
