Press release from Buncombe County Schools (BCS):
(ASHEVILLE)- BCS today announces bold moves in an effort to attract and retain drivers for its 250 bus fleet. Beginning February 22, all steps of the bus driver pay scale were increased so that new and current drivers will earn more money. Permanent bus drivers will now earn an hourly rate of at least $14.12, while the rate for substitute bus drivers increased from $12.01 per hour to $12.75.
As a recruitment incentive, new bus drivers recommended for employment will be:
- Reimbursed the cost of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) once the license is obtained. This is approximately $148 and will be paid upon employment;
- Paid a $100 signing bonus in their first paycheck. Only new bus drivers who begin work prior to June 9, 2016 will be eligible for this signing bonus.
New pay scale for permanent bus drivers:
Full-time, permanent positions also qualify for benefits to include employer-paid health insurance for employees and a defined-benefit pension plan.
“We strongly believe today’s announcements provide Buncombe County Schools with an immediate and distinct competitive advantage in attracting and retaining high-quality, dependable bus drivers to safely transport our students every day,” said Joseph Hough, BCS Assistant Superintendent.
