Buncombe County Parks & Recreation is thrilled to host their second Intellectually and Developmentally Disabled (IDD) Adult Fishing Tournament, scheduled to take place on Friday, October 13 from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. at Charles D. Owen Park (875 Warren Wilson Road) in Swannanoa. This fishing tournament will provide a unique opportunity for individuals to engage in a fun and inclusive fishing experience, meet friends and enjoy the beauty of the park!
The tournament aims to create a safe and enjoyable environment. To ensure optimal supervision and support, a 2:1 participant to caretaker ratio is required, unless the participant is accompanied by their legal guardian. Additionally, shade tents will be strategically deployed throughout the park to ensure participants’ comfort during the event.Anglers will have the opportunity to easily record one fish at a time with the assistance of Parks & Recreation Staff.
The event will follow a catch-and-release policy. Fishing will commence at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at 11:00 a.m. Participants are encouraged to arrive a little early to collect their name badges, snacks, and other essentials before the fishing session begins.
Exciting prizes await the winners of the competition. There will be three categories: Biggest Fish, Most Fish, and Smallest Fish. Each category will each have first, second, and third place winners. Prizes will be awarded based on the participants’ accomplishments and will be announced after the results are finalized.
Light grab-n-go snacks such as granola bars, apple sauce pouches, juice boxes, and water will be available. A delicious hamburger or veggie burger lunch will be served beginning at 11:00 a.m. with a selection preference indicated during pre-registration.
While personal fishing equipment and tackle are encouraged, loaner rods and equipment can be provided. Participants are also advised to come prepared with sun protective clothing, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes.
Admission to the tournament is free; however, pre-registration is required. Open registration will begin on Friday, September 29 and will conclude on Wednesday, October 11.
