Chef Elliott Moss‘ new barbecue joint Buxton Hall boasts a new upstairs lounge. The Remingtin Room, inspired in part by Moss’ favorite Memphis dive bar, will be open Fridays and Saturdays, from 6 p.m., to 2 a.m. Local blues and R&B DJ Greg Cartwright will spin on Saturdays, beginning Oct. 10.

Elliott Moss’ favorite bar in the world is a little place in Memphis, Tennessee, called Earnestine & Hazel’s. It’s a dive bar rooted in the city’s rich history, whose building was a pharmacy in the 1930’s… among other things. When Moss first saw what would be the mezzanine of Buxton Hall Barbecue, an intimate space framed by salvaged wood and cement, overlooking the vast dining hall, he immediately thought of that bar and knew it would become something special.
A month after Buxton’s opening, we are excited to announce that our upstairs mezzanine has finally come alive as the Remingtin Room, featuring late night service every Friday & Saturday from 6pm to 2am. Think hanging beads, a wood paneled barback hosting Moss’ personal collection of strange ceramic curios, dim lighting, an old RC cola vending machine storing cold beer and canned soda which will be transformed into “alcopops” during service. Alongside, bargoers can find classic cocktails, punch in a cutglass bowl, as well as cheap beer and shots all cooked up by Kyle Gray Beach and his creative bar team.
We’ll also be serving a small menu of food featuring items like savory meat pies (made with the exceptional hogfat crust of Buxton’s house bakery), pitroasted barbecue mussels, salads with smoked Humboldt Fog, and Buxton meats shaved to order. Expect oysters with muscadine mignonette at our very own oyster bar throughout the evening. The idea is to have the upstairs be a hot house of experimentation and a place for Moss and his team to stretch their culinary wings wherever they find inspiration, using all the wonderful smoke and flavors Buxton offers, while the restaurant continues to focus on its own downhome Eastern Carolina barbecue.
And to top it all off, every Saturday starting October 10th, we invite Greg Cartwright, local legendary performer, to DJ, spinning blues and R&B, and bring the dance floor to life with his musical stylings. Known for the Oblivians and more recently, Reigning Sound, Cartwright moved to Asheville in the early 2000’s and quickly gained a name for himself as a DJ at local joints. That’s when Moss and Cartwright met; Moss in the kitchen and Cartwright behind a stack of records, and they’ve remained close in the years that followed. Now that Moss has a restaurant of his own, Cartwright will be joining the scene to christen the space with his soulful sounds.
