“Chicago After Dark”: Cabaret Blues and Jazz with Linda Mitchell
Friday, January 16 – 8 p.m.- “Chicago After Dark”, Linda Mitchell and guests, cabaret jazz/blues, $15Chicago is called the Windy City, not for its weather but for the amount of air proud residents expend extolling its virtues. Among the Second City’s distinctions is its rich music scene. Louis Armstrong and other jazz players made their names in Chicago, establishing the city a a jazz hub, and bluesmen like Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy and countless others forged their styles in Southside clubs. Singer and guitarist Linda Mitchell grew up surrounded by the city’s musical sounds and made them her own. On Friday, January 16 at 8 p.m. Mitchell and her band of local all-stars will perform “Chicago After Dark: Blues and Jazz”, part of the popular White Horse Cabaret Jazz Series.
Linda Mitchell absorbed the music of her guitarist father at home. She was so eager to make music that the left-handed Mitchell taught herself to play his guitar right-handed. She found her voice as a singer-songwriter, but always found herself drawn to jazz standards and blues. She learned jazz chording to accompany her smoky vocals and played gigs in small clubs and coffeehouses while working as a community organizer in Chicago. A 1980s visit to Asheville planted the seed for an eventual move to WNC , where she’s maintained a steady calendar of solo and duo gigs at local venues. For her White Horse show she’s assembled a band of pros, including Ruth Cooney, Jason DeCristofaro, Danny Ianucci, Aaron Price, Duane Simpson and Micah Thomas.
Show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15.
Advance tickets available online.
