The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts is proud to announce that the Mississippi-born artist and educator Willie Ray Parish has agreed to serve as juror for the 30th Anniversary Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition. Sculptors may begin submissions on January 4. Deadline for submissions, which will be accepted online only, at www.rosensculpture.org/prospectus-2016.php, is February 18.
In celebration of the contest’s thirtieth anniversary, this year there will be no entry fee.
As is traditional, Parish will choose ten finalists for mid-April installation on the campus of Appalachian State University, each of whom will receive $1,200 honorarium. Winners will be named during the July 23rd Rosen Sculpture Walk, led by Parish, as part of An Appalachian Summer Festival. All three winners will be designated Martin & Doris Rosen 30th Anniversary Award Winners, and will receive cash prizes: $3,000 for First Place, $2,000 for Second Place and $1,000 for Third Place. Awards and Honoraria total $18,000. The Rosen Sculpture Competition offers a sales program, brochure, promotion as a featured exhibition, and permanent archives on the competition’s website located at: www.rosensculpture.org.
About Willie Ray Parish
A Mississippi native, Willie Ray Parish attended the University of Mississippi on a football scholarship, graduating in 1970 with a BFA in sculpture. He earned an MFA at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles in 1978, returning to Mississippi to direct the Education Department and the New South Film Center at the Mississippi Museum of Art. In 1981, he joined the art faculty at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He moved to the University of Texas at El Paso in 1984 where he ran the sculpture program and twice served as the Art Department Chair. In May 2013, he retired from teaching after a 32-year university career and received the status of Professor Emeritus.
Parish’s works are featured in numerous public and private collections including the El Paso Museum of Art, the Mississippi Museum of Art, Washington D.C.’s Newseum, the Albuquerque Museum of Art, and Earthship Biotecture in Taos. He is founder and Director of the Border Art Residency and, with his wife, artist Becky Hendrick, hosted the program on their property in La Union, New Mexico from 2000 to 2015. The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts presents exhibition, education and collection programs that support Appalachian State University’s role as a key regional educational, cultural and economic resource.
The Turchin Center is located at 423 West King St., in Boone. Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Tues.-Thurs. and Saturday, and Noon-8 p.m., Friday. The Center is closed Sunday and Monday, and observes all university holidays. There is no admission charge, although donations are gratefully accepted.
