PRESS RELEASE:
Creative students at Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County and in schools throughout Henderson County are encouraged to submit artwork, essays, poems, (ages 13-18) short films, and/or photography (ages 13-22) inspired by the theme “Peace through People.” The work should convey what that concept means to the artist. Local students will be competing with young artists, authors, filmmakers, and photographers from around the world in the 2016 Young Artists and Authors Showcase (YAAS), sponsored by Sister Cities International. Hendersonville Sister Cities (HSC) is the local sponsor for area students, who are encouraged to use their imaginations and come up with their most creative work. The deadline for submission of works is April 15.
Grand prize winners in each category will receive $1,000 each. Winning and finalist artworks, essays, and poems will be displayed in Washington, D.C. and in various U.S. cities during the 2016 Young Artists and Authors Showcase tour.
No entry fee is required except for a $25 fee for film entries. Local inquiries and submissions should be made to Mike Swartzlander, President, Hendersonville Sister Cities, by April 15. A panel of judges will choose the best submission(s) to be sent to the international competition by May 1. HSC will pay transportation costs for any Hendersonville Grand Prize winner or Finalist to the 60th Annual Conference of Sister Cities International in Washington, D.C. (July 13-16), where the winning entries will be displayed. Learn more about YAAS and find entry forms and submission guidelines at http://sistercities.org/YAAS.
“Artists at Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County will be participating in the art category,” Swartzlander said. “We’d love to have entries in the authors, filmmakers, and photographers categories as well. HSC is especially excited to be participating this year, as it’s the 60th Anniversary of Sister Cities International.”
HSC is a nonprofit organization formed in 2007 to foster and celebrate international cooperation and understanding and local economic growth through education, exploration of other cultures, travel, and social interaction.
