FROM BROOKLYN TO BENARES AND BACK: DADA VEDA
Mesmerizing Memoir Launch at Malaprops
Asheville, NC: At 7 p.m. on Friday, April 10, 2015 at Malaprops Bookstore, Dada Vedaprajinananda will launch his new memoir, From Brooklyn to Benares and Back. In a clear, accessible style, Dada demystifies Eastern spirituality, painting it with the earthy brush of a Brooklyn native.
Juxtaposing east and west and the spiritual with the secular, Dada describes his Brooklyn childhood in the conforming 1950s, through the cataclysmic peace-and-love 60s and on to thrilling spiritual journeys in the Far East, where he finds his guru. During this globetrotting spiritual quest, Dada finds his spiritual home in Ananda Marga, becoming a monk, and dedicating his life to serving humanity.
Also a musician and songwriter, Dada will play a couple of his songs at this event. One of his songs,” No More Blood, No More Tears” is currently entered in the Songs for Peace Contest:
The raging storm will one day end. The long time foe will be our friend.
Like to make the bitter sweet. Try to see the world complete.
Sometimes I wonder when the job will be done. To fix this globe for everyone.
There’ll be no more blood. No more tears. An end to strife. An end to tears
— (“No More Blood, No More Tears”).
From Brooklyn to Benares and Back brims over with adventure and excitement as it ebbs and flows within the author’s psyche and then outward in intensely human interactions throughout his travels and work. The well-crafted language lulls us into a sense that we are with Dada, that we know him, and that he is part of our family. Indeed, ever present in the narrative that stretches to several continents, only to land us right back where we started in Brooklyn is the one constant we are given—change. Yet, oh, what we have seen through Dada’s eyes and how we have been invited to change and grow!
