Press release from City of Asheville:
Over the past several years, City staff have been working closely with the Burton Street Community Association to aid in implementation of the Burton Street Neighborhood Plan, which was approved by City Council in 2018. The plan outlines goals and strategies aimed at preserving neighborhood character, among other priorities for the neighborhood. And, as a result, the City and the community association determined that a digital pattern book should be created as a tool to help preserve community character and mitigate insensitive infill in the neighborhood.
As a first step in working towards completing a pattern book, the City contracted with SM&E in 2021 to complete an architectural survey of the neighborhood with the goal of highlighting neighborhood history, and illustrating common building typologies and streetscape elements. The project was funded by a $4,000 donation from the Burton Street Community Association which was supplemented by the City’s Planning and Urban Design Department for a total project budget of $6,000.
The City is excited to announce the completion of the architectural survey project and to publish the final draft Burton Street Architectural Survey Report. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating completion of this important work. Stay tuned for updates on the forthcoming Burton Street Neighborhood Pattern Book.
