Press release from Western North Carolina AIDS Project:
Take Back the Vote: Women to the Front of the Polls, A Morning Discussion around Local Women in this Election
Asheville, NC: Join Western North Carolina AIDS Project (WNCAP), Planned Parenthood South Atlantic (PPSAT), and key women’s and LGBTQ community leaders for a radical and intersectional morning of discussion on Saturday, October 29th from 11am-1:30pm at Grail Moviehouse. We will be discussing the “spectrum of difference” – from radical and violent rhetoric to cynicism and apathy – in this election cycle, and why it matters to “vote down the ballot” for local politics.
96 years ago, women won the right to vote. 51 years ago, the Voting Rights Act was passed. And only late this summer were North Carolina’s voting restrictions shot down in court. Yet today, voter apathy is real. So, what happened?
Screening the documentary “Standing on My Sisters’ Shoulders” we will address voting access in the Deep South, and the power of the vote in Western North Carolina with heated issues at stake like HB2 and voter suppression.
Admission is free and open to the public. Food will be provided.
