Educational concert series teaches students about finance in an unconventional setting

Press release from OnTrack:

GOODING, a Nashville-based indie rock band, announced it will be performing a series of financial literacy rock concerts for Asheville schools through a partnership with nonprofit Funding the Future.

Using the power of a live rock performance to deliver inspirational lessons of finance and discipline to young people, Funding the Future helps students see their dreams as possibilities. The nonprofit’s performance combines a concert, multimedia presentation and talkback to discuss predatory lending, saving early and the danger of credit card debt, while exposing the myth of overnight success associated with rock stars, athletes and actors.

The tour will begin on October 3, 2016 and continue through the week, making stops at three local schools.

Asheville Middle School – October 3, 9:15 a.m.
Erwin Middle School – October 3, 1:30 p.m.
Owen Middle School – October 4, 1:30 p.m.

“We feel it’s absolutely crucial that financial literacy is taught in our schools and discussed in our communities,” said Gooding, lead guitarist and singer for the band GOODING. “The music gets the students’ attention and creates some trust in the room, and then we discuss mistakes we’ve made, credit scores, saving slow and steady, and predatory loans. We have talked to thousands of people at shows and on the street, and we feel this issue is a common denominator to so many problems later in life.”

These local concerts are sponsored by Starks Financial Group and are part of a 60 show national financial literacy rock concert tour that will make stops across the country over the course of 12 weeks.

“We’re proud to partner with Funding the Future to help educate the next generation before they have to make financial decisions such as taking out loans or getting credit cards,” said Sacha Millstone, Funding the Future board member and senior vice president of investments at the Millstone Evans Group of Raymond James. “We’ve seen firsthand the positive impact that these concerts have on students and are excited to bring GOODING’s rock ‘n’ roll approach to financial literacy into local communities across the nation.”
