Farm dinner honoring women & food

PRESS RELEASE:

A very special farm dinner will be held on July 31st, hosted by Green Toe Ground’s cofounder and farmer, Nicole DelCogliano, in honor of women farmers and chefs.

Joining her in this celebration of women “foodies” are chefs Allegra Grant and Austin Whitty, two up and coming chefs working under the tutelage of chef Katie Button of Nightbell and Curate fame. The dinner will be held Sunday July 31st, at Green Toe Ground farm in Yancey county featuring a summer menu showcasing sweet and spicy combinations designed to amuse and delight diners.

The dinner is themed to honor the fact that while women have long been cultivators of
the earth and creators in the kitchen, their professional work as farmers and chefs is sometimes overlooked or marginalized by media and culture. Today the number of female chefs and women farmers continues to grow and expand, yet their place has often been less visible. The event will serve to highlight, celebrate, and feature these regional role models. “Farming challenges me everyday and deeply satisfies my creativity as a person. I am humbled and honored to use the title farmer and each day know I have more to learn,” says Nicole DelCogliano.
The dinner itself showcases the collaborative nature of women and serves to honor the
immense creativity they bring. Nicole, a farmer in Yancey County, did not grow up farming, but came to it in her early 20s in New York, her home state and through trial and error and side by side learning with her farm partner and husband, Gaelan Corozine, she has come to claim the life and the title of farmer. Allegra, interested in cooking from a very young age, studied at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte, and then moved to Asheville to further her career as a chef. “ The best food to me does not pass through many hands, only a few, and that’s what I love about Asheville. We have such a diverse food scene here that focuses on supporting the farmers
as much as we can to get flavor rich vegetables on the table.”
Austin, who grew up in Florida, the citrus capital of the south, is a pastry chef and has
been a core team member in two restaurant opens, including the Rusty Spoon, a James Beard nominated woman run restaurant. This collaboration of these three women to offer a farm dinner is great example of sharing stories of women and food from behind the scenes.
