Hot tunes from Asheville Jazz Orchestra at White Horse, Jan. 18
The Asheville Jazz Orchestra presents the first of its monthly 2015 appearances at the White Horse Black Mountain on Sunday, January 18, at 7:30 p.m. with a swinging evening of big band favorites and fresh new compositions.
Founded in 2006 the Asheville Jazz Orchestra has become western North Carolina’s premier big band. By expertly recreating the swing era hits of the 1930s and 1940s the AJO creates public awareness and appreciation for the rich big band heritage. But no living musical style remains static, so the AJO expands the tradition by performing works by contemporary composers and arrangers. Whether they’re playing big band era hits at a swing dance or premiering a brand new composition in a concert setting, the AJO both preserves and advances the American art form of big band jazz.
The musicians who perform with the AJO rank among some of the finest jazz musicians in the area. Band members have experience performing with legendary professional groups such as the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Mel Tormé, When Swing Was King, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, and Guy Lombardo’s Royal Canadians.
The Asheville Jazz Orchestra is directed by Dr. David Wilken, who also plays trombone with the group and writes much of the music they perform.
