Press release:
Jay Walker Memorial Golf Fund at CFHC Celebrates Decade of Supporting Local High School Golf Programs
HENDERSONVILLE, NC | OCT. 16, 2015: The Jay Walker Memorial Golf Fund, an endowed fund at Community Foundation of Henderson County, is celebrating a decade of providing charitable funds to support local high school golf programs.
Since its inception, the fund has awarded a total of more than $28,450 to the men’s and women’s golf programs at Hendersonville, East, North and West Henderson High Schools.
On Sept. 17, 2004, the remnants of Hurricane Ivan came through Henderson County, resulting in the abrupt death of Jay Walker when a tree fell on his home. To honor his memory and support his lifelong passion for golf forever, the Jay Walker Memorial Golf Fund was established at the Community Foundation by his widow, Sandie Salvaggio-Walker.
Salvaggio-Walker said local golf coaches have told her that charitable gifts from the Jay Walker Memorial Golf Fund are the main support of funding for the local public schools’ high school golf programs. Awards from this endowed fund help the programs purchase any items coaches identify that their teams need, such as equipment, team shirts, and golf bags. As an endowment, charitable gifts will be able to be made forever from the fund.
Salvaggio-Walker said she appreciates that so many people in the community have made contributions to the fund to continue Jay Walker’s legacy. She also thanks all of the volunteers who helped with the golf tournaments she organized through the years that helped raise money for the fund.
Anyone can make a contribution to any fund at CFHC, including to the Jay Walker Memorial Golf Fund. People often make gifts to celebrate someone’s birthday or anniversary or to honor or memorialize someone. Contributions can be made securely online at www.cfhcforever.org/GiveNow or by sending checks to Community Foundation of Henderson County, PO Box 1108, Hendersonville, NC, 28793. If you send a contribution by check, please note the name of the fund on your check.
