Jimmy Landry’s 6th annual birthday bash, Oct. 19

From a press release:

Jimmy Landry’s 6th annual birthday bash, Oct. 19

Veteran singer-songwiter Jimmy Landry has good reason to celebrate. In 2008 he received a life-altering diagnosis of congestive heart failure and faced an uncertain future. Yet out of this frightening event came a celebration of life: a birthday oyster roast. In 2009 the party moved to the White Horse Black Mountain with music from Landry and friends, and a tradition was established. Jimmy Landry is still living life to the fullest and making music, with the Annual Big Birthday Bash now in its sixth year. Landry will be joined for this installment by Free Planet Radio’s Chris Rosser and Red June’s Will Straughan. The festivities commence at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 19.

Washington DC native Jimmy Landry has been a fixture on Asheville’s lively music scene for more than two decades. He’s shared stages with musical icons as diverse as Stevie Ray Vaughn, David Crosby, David Wilcox, John Gorka, Party Larkin and many more, and has been a featured performer at prestigious festivals like Kerrville, The Philadelphia Folk Festival and Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Wherever he appears Landry brings his great songs, memorable voice and passionate enthusiasm, all tied together by his powerful sense of the power of community.

Multi-instrumentalist Chris Rosser is familiar to Asheville audiences through his solo work and his integral contribution to Free Planet Radio’s progressive world jazz sound. A man of many talents, he’s a singer-songwriter, composer and prolific producer. His instrumental skills extend to guitar, keyboards, sarod, Indian dotar, Turkish cumbus, oud and melodica. His award winning songs have garnered national attention, and he’s been featured at the Kerrville and Falcon Ridge Folk Festivals.

Will Straughan is best known as a dobro and guitar player, singer and songwriter with the popular band Red June. Fans of the group are familiar with the his powerful instrumental style and vocal authority, but he also has a sizable repertoire of original songs that he performs outside of the Red June format. His music is rooted in Appalachian tradition but delivered with modern awareness.
