Local author Megan Shepherd makes the New York Times bestseller list

PRESS RELEASE FROM HARPERCOLLINS:

THE CAGE is the first in a trilogy of science fiction novels for teens, and the sequel, THE HUNT, was released May 24, and the third and concluding volume in the trilogy, THE GAUNTLET, will be released in May 2017.

image001Called “swoon-worthy and thrilling” by Kirkus Reviews, THE CAGE follows six teenagers who are abducted and trapped in a human zoo by an otherworldly race known as the Kindred, where they are observed and their every movement controlled. Their mysterious jailer tries to gain their trust, but the heroine, Cora, is determined to escape from captivity.

Shepherd’s first three novels, also from Balzer + Bray, were a trilogy of historical thrillers based on literary classics. THE MADMAN’S DAUGHTER was based on The Island of Dr. Moreau by H. G. Wells; HER DARK CURIOSITY was inspired by Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson; and A COLD LEGACY has shades of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

THE MADMAN’S DAUGHTER was awarded the North Carolina Young Adult Book Award in 2013, received a starred review in School Library Journal, and was featured on numerous “best of” lists for young adults. It has also been optioned for film by Paramount Pictures.

Megan Shepherd grew up in Brevard, North Carolina, where her parents owned an independent bookstore for 40 years. After living abroad for several years, spending two years with the Peace Corps in Senegal, and two years in Washington, D.C., she returned with her husband to the mountains of Western North Carolina. They currently live on a farm in Etowah with one scruffy dog, two cats, 11 chickens, and two beehives.
