Meadowlark Motel launches artist residency program with Mike Ogletree

Press release from Meadowlark Motel:

Commencing its first ever artist residency program, Meadowlark Motel is proud to welcome Mike Ogletree, former drummer for the super band Simple Minds, to the resort motel. Ogletree will bring his live music to many of the motel’s weekly events as well as play a big role in the motel’s social media presence.

Ogletree will also be reaching out to fans and guests with Facebook posts about musical events at the motel, as well as area events of interest that tie in to what the motel is doing, helping to showcase local artists and cultural artisans for collaborations.

Meadowlark Motel is currently hosting musical events in its outdoor pavilion, highlighting its beautiful setting along the creek. Once the winter rolls in, the music won’t stop however, with the motel relocating musical events to the artist lounge or lobby.

“Through our artist residency program,” said Joseph Franklyn McElroy, Managing Partner, “the Meadowlark Motel hopes to forge a vibrant cultural exchange of artists from within and without the community who will collaborate on styles, ideas, and cultural knowledge. We liken the residency to the concept of foreign exchange students, but on an artistic level. We are open to artists of all different backgrounds and mediums, not just musical. “

McElroy also said a featured goal is to produce an album with the artwork supplied by local artists from the area. The motel plans to promote local talent through workshops, offering opportunities to showcase and express their creativity, whether it be sculptures, beadwork, woodwork, art, or textiles.

McElroy believes the Meadowlark Motel is poised through this program to become a focal point and collaborative meeting area with a monthly artisan market where people can display and network their talents for the community.

“As the program progresses,” said Ogletree, “we are eager to provide a forum for offering classes, workshops, and demonstrations by the community, with the goal of facilitating a Maggie Valley art coalition through gathered interest.”
