Press release from Purna Yoga 828:
Alignment-based yoga has a new home.
After over a decade teaching in various studios, building a following in Asheville, and recently completing a 2,000 hour program, Letitia Walker has opened her own studio, Purna Yoga 828. PY828 is the first dedicated Purna Yoga studio in the city, with a mission to be a safe home for people to explore, grow, blossom and evolve.
Founded by Aadil Palkhivala and his wife, Savitri, Purna Yoga is a relatively new style that is alignment-based, heart-centered, and community-oriented. The roots of Purna Yoga include the work and writings of Sri Aurobindo, one of India’s great modern philosophers and a founder of the Indian Independence Movement. To honor those roots, PY828 is holding an open house on Saturday, August 11, from 12-3 p.m., to celebrate Savitri’s and Sri Aurobindo’s August birthdays.
The new, “state-of-the-ancient-art” studio is located in the heart of West Asheville, at 697 D Haywood Road in the shopping plaza with BimBeriBon and Foothills Meats next to Ingles. Visitors will have the opportunity to get a short consult with any of the five Purna Yoga teachers on staff, experience the traction benefits of the “Great Yoga Wall,” and take a free 30 minute mini-class at 1:30 pm.
PY828’s director Letitia says, “One of the things I love about Purna Yoga is the lineage it draws from, including the asana approach of B. K. S. Iyengar, the philosophy and social justice work of Sri Aurobindo, as well as the over 85 years combined experience of Aadil and Savitri in yoga and meditation. Hosting a birthday party to celebrate Savitri and Sri Aurobindo’s birthdays is the perfect opportunity to show respect for my teachers, share the studio we’ve built with the community, and eat some birthday cake!”
