Rising Appalachia announces Winter Solstice performances in Asheville

PRESS RELEASE FROM EVENT ORGANIZERS:

In what is becoming an annual tradition for the Atlanta-born, Appalachian-bred, grassroots justice-seeking Folk/World troubadours, Rising Appalachia has just announced their 2016 Winter Solstice performance dates.

Scheduled for two nights at the Orange Peel in Asheville, NC, and one night at Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse, the band will wrap up an extensive year of touring with select performances in two of the southern cities they call home. Sister Chloe Smith shares:

“Atlanta is our hometown. We used to sneak into the Variety Playhouse for Hip-Hop and Ani Difranco shows in our teenage years. There is a certain rebellious yet extremely comfortable air about performing in your hometown. The stakes are high, and yet, there’s always more family in the room than any other show that year.”

While all of the band members current reside in Asheville when not on the road, they haven’t played the state of North Carolina in almost a year since joining in solidarity with countless other musician who have vowed to boycott the discriminatory policy decisions of the state’s government. Sister Leah Song expands:

“After nearly six months of boycotting – which have cost North Carolina hundreds of millions of dollars so far in lost revenue – we would have hoped that the Governor of NC would change his stance on his embarrassing move. He hasn’t, so we’re changing ours. We are deeply encouraging each of our fans to cast a vote for equality and civil rights in November. We are not going to tell you how to cast your ballot, but there is more at stake than just the presidency – learn the impact of your vote locally. We hope to celebrate a return to civility in North Carolina and in the South this December! We are pleased to announce a full Solstice run this December and are working steadily to create a platform within the shows to benefit the work of groups like Equality NC, Southerners On New Ground (S.O.N.G) and Campaign for Southern Equality.”

In true Slow Music Movement fashion – a term coined by the band to describe their ongoing efforts to promote sustainable touring practices in the music industry and increase community engagement at their performances – the band will be organizing a Permacutlure Action Day following the performance dates at Urban Sprout Farms in Atlanta, GA.

Rising Appalachia will additionally be releasing a short documentary about the band that was filmed in New Orleans – where Rising Appalachia spent the earlier part of their career cutting their teeth while busking in the streets of the French Quarter. Sponsored by Guayake Yerba Mate, the documentary was produced by award-winning filmmaker Cyrus Sutton, founder and creative director of Korduroy.tv – an online media site that explores sustainability and the outdoors. While the exact release date has yet to be announced, both teams are working to ensure it’s release is in support of their upcoming 2016 Resiliency Fall Tour and Winter Solstice performances.

The band will perform at The Orange Peel on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 14 and 15. For a complete listing of tour dates visit Rising Appalachia online at:
