Sarah Louise‘s album “Field Guide” comes out this month on Scissor Tail Editions. Sarah’s music is a sonic journey through her home in the Black Mountains: smooth-stone creek bottoms, delicate lunar-born mushrooms beneath rhododendron boughs, extreme changes in elevation. Her unique 12-string guitar-style is heavily influenced by her clawhammer banjo-playing as well as other Appalachian and nature-based drone styles from around the world. Sarah has performed on bills with contemporary guitar luminaries such as Nathan Salsburg and Daniel Bachman and will be featured in an upcoming interview on Sideways Through Sound, a program on Australia’s public radio. Field Guide is available for pre-order here.
Shane Parish, formerly Shane Perlowin, is best known for his work in the experimental jazz-rock outfit Ahleuchatistas. But Odei is his first solo record under his new name—he changed his name in honor of his grandmother—and it marks a brilliant new direction. The album is a solo guitar set, and it argues that obscure sounds and inviting ones are not mutually exclusive… As with Ahleuchatistas, you can’t help but feel the tensions here are as political as they are personal, but there’s also a sense of playfulness in all this expression, even a sense of escape. There’s something almost spiritual in the execution that aligns Parish with the likes of Robbie Basho. Unlike Basho, though, Parish carves out spaces, defines the quiet around him rather than filling it up. Odei is a remarkable album, one that surprises in a new way with each listen. It may also be the best experimental album of the year. — Matt Fiander
Odei was released on Marmara Records on in January 2015.
Wes Tirey is an Ohio-born, North Carolina-based guitarist and songwriter. Tirey draws from songwriting greats and the American Primitive tradition, from Kath Bloom to John Fahey. His recordings, generally made at home using lo-fi equipment and techniques, have been released on Dying for Bad Music, Orange Milk Records, Scissor Tail Editions, Full Spectrum Records, and Twin Springs Tapes.
Tirey’s latest release, Gnostic Hymns of the Blue Ridge Mountains Vol. 1, is a collection of instrumental pieces that meditate on the grandeur of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Hospital Call is the solo project of Amanda Haswell. She constructs guitar-based songs that are largely haunting with poignant lyrics and a wide vocal range.
