Press release from Senator Chuck Edwards:
RALEIGH, N.C. – Sen. Chuck Edwards (R-Henderson) was appointed by Senate Leader Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) to co-chair the important Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on Unemployment Insurance.
The oversight committee is responsible for monitoring the Cooper Administration’s Division of Employment Security (DES), which is critical right now with unemployment so high because of the pandemic-related shutdowns.
Earlier this year, Gov. Cooper’s administration had a difficult time issuing unemployment checks, with many people waiting weeks or even months to receive payment. This is not a new problem for Gov. Cooper. His administration ranked dead last in timeliness of unemployment benefits delivery last year.
Sen. Edwards said, “I’m eager to accept this challenging oversight responsibility. Thousands of people in our community waited weeks and months for the Cooper Administration to send out unemployment checks earlier this year, and I intend to aggressively oversee the Cooper Administration’s work to issue the new $300 weekly supplement offered by President Trump.”
Sen. Berger said, “Sen. Edwards is a passionate advocate for his community. He’s the right person to co-chair this critical committee now, when oversight is most needed.”
